“Behavior can change for a moment, but only a changed heart will last a lifetime.”
We often think of discipline as punishment, a response to something wrong we’ve done. But discipline, especially God’s discipline is not about behavior control.
It’s about heart transformation.
If I only focus on modifying my actions, I might appear “put together” on the outside while my heart remains hard, prideful, or self-serving. A changed heart looks like humility instead of defensiveness. Like softness instead of stubbornness. Like surrender instead of striving. It’s not performative. It’s authentic. And that kind of change can only come when I welcome discipline not as rejection, but as love in motion.
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Psalm 51:10
